U.S., UK Record Steep Decline in Global Corruption Rankings
The UK suffered a dramatic 13-position freefall—from seventh globally in 2015 to 20th in 2025—while its numerical score slipped from 71 to 70. The US dropped to 29th place from 28th, marking its worst-ever rating of 64 points.
The annual assessment, which gauges public sector corruption through expert and business community surveys worldwide, highlighted systemic governance failures in nations historically considered bastions of democratic accountability.
Transparency International flagged escalating concerns surrounding political financing, pay-for-influence schemes, and government-backed intimidation of journalists and activists.
Britain's major political parties faced scrutiny over heavy dependence on elite donors during the 2024 election cycle. The organization warned the nation will likely remain "mired in scandal" throughout this year, referencing explosive disclosures about Labour heavyweight and ex-US ambassador Peter Mandelson's connections to convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.
Just seven nations achieved scores exceeding 80 points. Denmark claimed the top position for an eighth straight year, trailed by Finland, Singapore, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland.
South Sudan and Somalia shared bottom ranking, narrowly trailing Venezuela, Yemen, and Libya.
The watchdog organization expressed alarm at democratic deterioration across established governments.
"The global order is under strain from rivalry between major powers, and dangerous disregard for international norms," it said. "Armed conflicts and the climate crisis are having a deadly impact. Societies are also becoming more polarised."
"To meet these challenges, the world needs principled leaders and strong, independent institutions that act with integrity to protect the public interest. Yet, too often, we are seeing a failure of good governance and accountable leadership," it added.
