IGAD Official Highlights Turkey’s Key Role in Horn of Africa Cooperation
Speaking on the forum’s second day, IGAD’s deputy executive secretary emphasized the depth of the relationship, saying, “Türkiye is a very important partner for IGAD … not only for IGAD as a secretariat but also for our member states,” Mohamed Abdi Ware said.
He pointed out that Ankara has built and maintained solid connections throughout the Horn of Africa region, including Ethiopia, Djibouti, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, and Uganda.
According to him, these relationships continue to expand, with cooperation and mutual trust strengthening over time.
Reaffirming optimism for the future, he added, “We are really looking forward to continuing this collaboration,” he stressed.
Ware also drew attention to Türkiye’s active diplomatic involvement in the region, particularly its mediation efforts between Somalia and Ethiopia amid tensions surrounding Somaliland. He explained that Türkiye played “a very big role” in facilitating dialogue between the two sides.
“The role of Türkiye has been well appreciated by both sides because both sides saw Türkiye as a neutral arbitrator,” he said, highlighting that Ankara helped bring both parties to the negotiating table without enforcing outcomes.
In addition, the official conveyed gratitude for Türkiye’s role in hosting the Antalya Diplomacy Forum. He described the gathering as “a very good platform for discussing world issues,” especially in light of ongoing global challenges, and noted that IGAD intends to remain actively involved in such initiatives to advance peace, cooperation, and mutual understanding.
